My son, at age 22, was put into prison after being charged with "Computer Aided Solicitation of a Minor". The girl was 15 (almost 16) and participated fully in the conversation and never blocked my son. (this is important to note, it takes seconds for someone to block anyone in chat, seconds) For online chat only, never meeting or attempting to meet the person, it should be considered a misdemeanor and NEVER have the young man be put on a registry for the public to humiliate! THEN I find out it's so common it's ridiculous! This law has to be repealed and I'll make sure somehow, some way! There needs to be a differentiation at LEAST..never meeting but talking about sex should be a misdemeanor if it is anyone younger than 25, period. If it is dangerous talking and meeting up in a dangerous location, that might be considered a felony - it depends on the circumstances and if they can prove there was criminal intent. If they planned on meeting in a PUBLIC PLACE, again, it should be considered a misdemeanor, simply because no sex is intended in a public place. It all boils down to criminal intent - there was NONE in my sons case and plenty of other cases of young men chatting (mostly with cops!) |

Derek’s StoryWhen Derek was 18, he had just moved out and was living on his own.A friend had turned him on to selling books on the internet. He was making a pretty good living. He was chatting on the internet with a 13 year old girl and I am sure it was not his first time. Anyway, the 13 year old that he was chatting with turned out to be a 45 year old undercover cop. They agreed to meet in a town about an hour away from where he lived. When he got to the meeting place and got out of the car, that is when he was swarmed and arrested. They took him to the police station, got his statement, had him booked, and them a search warrant was issued for his apartment. He was arrested and stayed in jail for 3 days. He called and told me that he had been arrested for aggravated sexual assault of a child and his bond was set at $25,000.This was in July.We being ignorant of the laws did not think that they could make this charge stick, so we really didn’t put much effort into it. He got a cheap lawyer and we finally went to trial in February. we were in for a shock. The D.A. from Garland portrayed him as a monster. It was horrible. She wanted to give him 10 |

Ricky and Amanda met at an Iowa teen club on a Saturday night in December of 2005. Ricky was 16 and Amanda told him she was nearly the same age. They got to talking, learned they were from the same town outside the area and hit it off. They started dating and had sex on two occasions, definitely not the right thing for kids that age to do, but not uncommon. It ended when Amanda told Ricky's mother she was only 14 and asked her not to reveal this to Ricky. Actually, she was 13. Several months later Amanda ran away from home. At the urging of the friend she was staying with, she contacted the police and told them she was afraid to go home. The police picked her up and took her home. |
